‘Girl with Hoop’ 2002 - 2003 a maquette of the commissioned sculpture for Normansfield Hospital, Richmond, London a mixed materials sculpture: bronze finished glass reinforced plastic with brass coated steel elements 890mm high x 560mm wide x 180mm deep by the British sculptor André Wallace (born 1947) monogrammed to the back edge of the base and signed to the left hand side of the base.
Wallace’s work holds something in common with the work of Aristide Maillol and Frank Dobson. Undoubtedly, Wallace’s large-scale work has a heroism and monumentality, a relaxed classicism which both these sculptors evince. There is evident in the work of all three having a similar poise, confidence, and above all, formal clarity. Andrew Lambirth.
The 3 dimensional, multi-faceted viewpoints invite the onlooker to move around the work to see every aspect and silhouette and every modulation from highlights to the deepest shadows. There is no prescriptive meaning. Sue O’Brien
