Alexis Simon Belle 1
The Honorable Mildmay Fane by Alexis-Simon Belle (1674-1734)
Oil on Canvas Size: 148cm x 124cm framed.
Housed in a British Baroque style gilt frame.
Provenance: Held by the family at Apethorpe Hall, Wansford, Northamptonshire. The Honorable Mildmay Fane (1689-1715) was a military man and British politician; portrayed here in a three quarter length standing pose, wearing a silk embroidered coat with a blue cloak. He has his right hand on his hip, which was a familiar stance in the 18th Century, when having your portrait painted. His left hand is resting on a plinth. In the right hand corner is a landscape scene. Later inscribed ‘My fifth son/Vere E. of Westmorland’ and inscribed verso ‘Mildmay-5th-son of/4th Earl of Westmorland.’ Fane did not survive his election very long, dying unmarried on September 11th 1715. He left his lands to his brother, Col.John Fane, who replaced him as the member for Kent in an uncontested by-election. The painting was purchased by Augusta Fane (his father’s first cousin) in a sale at Christies in June 1892. It last came on the market in 2008.

George Morland (1763-1804) Bedtime Oil on Panel, 36 x 28cm / 60 x 52cm
A touching subject matter and an excellent example of the work of one of Britain's most famous 18th Century painters. George Morland lived a very full and prolific life. He exhibited at the Royal Academy at the very young age of 10, and escaping from his father and taskmaster who apparently kept him virtual prisoner, making him draw and then selling his works and keeping the money, he went to Margate where he continued and developed his taste for a rollicking lifestyle of excess. Morland is infamous both for his excesses and for his skill as a draughtsman and his works are extremely sought after and well represented in National museums and private collections.

A pair of Andre-Charles Boulle (style) cabinets, circa 1860-1870.
A pair of cabinets in the style of Andre-Charles Boulle. They are of mahogany with tortoiseshell (turtleshell) marquetry and beautifully applied gilt bronze ormolu mounts, handles and decoration, including to the sides. There is a single key, which locks both cabinets securely. A sculpted black marble top creates elegance to these striking pieces, circa 1860-1870. The furniture of Andre-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) was so highly regarded, that it was collected by art connoisseurs even during his life-time. Its popularity has continued ever since, such that we now use his name to describe any piece of furniture which is made using this characteristic ebony-mounted turtleshell and brass marquetry veneer; it is called 'boulle marquetry.'
His pieces were finished off with the addition of sculptural mounts made of gilt bronze, which highlighted the corners, feet, keyholes, handles and even provided central features on certain pieces. It is particularly these mounts, often of classical imagery, that added grandeur to Boulle's furniture and turned utilitarian objects into works of art. One cabinet is slightly taller than the other, being 110cm as opposed to the other at 108cm. Both are 115cm long. They do vary again in depth, one being 40cm with the other 43cm (but sold as a pair, we will not separate) There is a single mahogany shelf to both pieces with a mahogany interior. In very good condition for its age. We have had the hair-line scratches polished out of the black marble and a small amount of chipping to the back edge has been restored. They are fabulous to look at.

‘Girl with Hoop’ 2002 - 2003 a maquette of the commissioned sculpture for Normansfield Hospital, Richmond, London a mixed materials sculpture: bronze finished glass reinforced plastic with brass coated steel elements 890mm high x 560mm wide x 180mm deep by the British sculptor André Wallace (born 1947) monogrammed to the back edge of the base and signed to the left hand side of the base.
Wallace’s work holds something in common with the work of Aristide Maillol and Frank Dobson. Undoubtedly, Wallace’s large-scale work has a heroism and monumentality, a relaxed classicism which both these sculptors evince. There is evident in the work of all three having a similar poise, confidence, and above all, formal clarity. Andrew Lambirth.
The 3 dimensional, multi-faceted viewpoints invite the onlooker to move around the work to see every aspect and silhouette and every modulation from highlights to the deepest shadows. There is no prescriptive meaning. Sue O’Brien

'Le Pianiste de Jazz' 1970 identified as 'Willie "The Lion" Smith a mixed metal and hand-painted unique sculpture 590mm high x 510mm wide x 430mm deep by Roger Bertin (French 1915-2003) signed and dated.
Created three years before the subject in the sculpture died. A black American fathered by a black American with French connections who was a Bonaparte. The name he retained but for a short time as his parents split up when he was a baby and his mother married an American named Smith. Willie Smith, known as Willie "The Lion" Smith, gained fame as one of the leading exponents of the Stride style of jazz. His nick-name “The Lion” was as a result of his heroics in the First World War. A black life that certainly did matter, one that was greatly appreciated and recognised for the great man that he was.
Provenance: From The Hanson Collection.
